Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is, for the moment, the BEST comic book movie ever…at least until Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse drops on March 29, 2024.
I’m not sure what I can say about the movie instead of the fact that everyone needs to go see it!!!
For someone, such as myself, who has collected comics for quite a long time and has all the books of the original Spiderverse arc from the comics, the Sony Spider-verse movies have been a treat thus far.
In this latest installment, the Spider-verse mythos has been expanded exponentially and we are introduced to a slew of Spiderman variants. Some of them get very brief cameos while others get substantial screen time. For long time Spiderman fans, youd brain will go crazy trying to keep up and identify all the Spiderman and Spiderwoman variants.
I’m still in awe at how the writers were able to incorporate some many characters into one movie. The main cast alone has over 20 characters both old and new! They even made the main villain, The Spot, much more powerful than his comic book counterpart. In the comics, The Spot is your run-of-the-mill comic book villain who just shows up for Spider-Man to punch on. It’s even joked about in the movie how he’s not that big of a threat…until he becomes a threat. This is something that great writers have done over the years with villains who have had a track record of not being “interesting”. For reference, there is a Daredevil arc, written by Kevin Smith that turns Mysterio into an A-list villain until Marvel editors neutered him exactly a month after he ruined Daredevils life for a few issues. This movie turns The Spot from a street-level criminal to a multiversal threat.
My hope is that everyone shares in the sheer joy that I felt while watching in seeing other Spiderman variants from diverse backgrounds all on one screen.
I’m going to let yall watch it and then we will discuss it next week!
