Captain MEHval – This Movie Is NOT The MCU GEM People Believe It To Be

I’ve been rewatching the MCU movies in timeline-order. My most recent watch was ‘Captain Marvel’.

Upon, further review, Captain Marvel was just ‘meh’. There’s really nothing about the movie that stands out except the final scene where she takes down the Kree ships.

The movie felt like it was more focused on checking things off a list. Specific moments felt like the creators were saying, “See. We mentioned it! Remember in the other movie when they talked about this thing. Well we mentioned here,” and just continued on with the rest of the movie.

We didn’t get much interaction between Coulson and Fury, so we didn’t much development of their relationship. Coulson seemed like a zombie in most scenes and didn’t say much. Coulson was just there to show that he worked with Fury as a rookie and helped him escape. There isn’t much else given to us.

Carol’s “coming out” at the climax of the movie fell flat for me. The montage of Carol’s past failures in my opinion didn’t serve any purpose and was a poor representation of Carol overcoming insurmountable odds to “break free” from whatever the hell she was supposed to be breaking free from. Yes, I know she broke free from the Supreme Intelligence’s inhibitor, however, didn’t we pretty much expect that to happen. I mean, we know for a fact Carol overcame every obstacle she faced over the course of her life. From what we were shown Carol was never “weak”. That’s obvious when finding out she was a fighter pilot in the military and that she is a respected Kree warrior.

The story should have started with her already finding out about how powerful she really was and her learning to control her powers after she accidentlyand unknowingly killed some Skrull refugees and some Kree warriors as well. The incident would have broken a treay between the Kree and Skrull, each side blaming each other, but ultimately seeking revenge against Carol. As a result, Carol has to learn to control her emotions, because when she loses control, the power she unleashes puts everyone around her in danger. To the extent that she almost destroys a planet when she gets upset one time. I feel this would have been a better way to go with her characters.

I feel like Marvel Studios didn’t know which direction to go with her character and pretty much tossed every idea out there to see what resonates with audiences.

I’m all for “Girl Power” and such, but Captain Marvel ain’t it!

The next movie in the MCU timline is Iron Man. Yet another one that isn’t high on my list.
